Imagine a stormy night, an almost empty fridge or pantry and a rumbling stomach. You’d rather eat plain porridge for the rest of the week than step out to get food. What to do?
Order in? An option, yes, but how about cooking? Not enough ingredients you say? There are at least a couple of cookbooks out there boasting recipes that call for no more than three ingredients. If they can do it, you can too. Do a head count, assess what you have and do a simple search on the ingredient you have most of.
Why go through all that trouble?
Here are some of the best reasons why home cooked meals are almost always the best.
- You get the freshest meal that can be. ‘nuff said.
- You know exactly what your meal contains. If you ever wondered about the quality, quantity and freshness of the ingredients in your take out or restaurant meals. well, one less reason to worry. For that reason, if you choose to dine out, plan for a restaurant that choses fresh, organic and locally grown produce if possible.
- No extra fat, no extra sugar, no extra salt and no extra secret ingredients that might cause bloating. If your home cooked meal causes any bloating, you will have identified something you need to stay away from in the future. A win-win situation.
- You are not assigned a certain size portion but instead eat as much as you feel like and there is no doggy bag to take home, hence no extra container to dispose of. Come to think of it, most containers are not recyclable. Whether it is the stylish waxed cardboard box or plain old Styrofoam — one of the worst environmental offender when it comes to food packaging — they’ll end up in the landfill.
- Cooking a meal, no matter how simple, will provide the time to settle into eating, mind and body. Also, you will not be throwing out any leftovers because, let’s be honest, no one wants their work to be trashed. And why would you? Simple meal or not, you put time, money and energy into it and that makes it that much more valuable.
- If you do it enough time you will, most likely, develop a knack for home cooked meals. Not just the final result, but the planning, cooking and the satisfaction that comes with it all.
- The truth is, and the older generations know it too well, a home is made more of a home when meals are cooked there. To add to that, nothing brings people together like a shared home cooked meal. Just try it.
