We are excited to offer you a new post-injury rehabilitation solution through a new program of Clinical Pilates offered by one of our physiotherapists, Stephanie McCann!
If you have worked with Stephanie before you are aware of her deep commitment to her work, and also of her ability to help clients work through their recovery from injuries. Whether you are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, if you are looking for a program to help you through post-injury rehabilitation, Stephanie’s Clinical Pilates classes will offer a thorough assessment of your condition, and a customized program to guide you through a smooth recovery.
What is Clinical Pilates, you may ask? Stephanie answers: Clinical Pilates was designed to be used in a rehabilitation environment to help individuals recover from injuries. Traditional Pilates exercises have been modified to break functional movements down into smaller components or ranges to improve motor recruitment, general strength, and motor control with the support of props such as springs and pulleys.’
If you are attending yoga classes, Clinical Pilates can complement that. ‘Personally, I have found my Pilates practice has improved and deepened my yoga practice. Pilates complements an individual’s yoga practice as it also emphasizes breathing which guides one’s movements, helps one understand their own alignment/anatomy and improve both mobility, flexibility, and stability along with general core strength,’ says Stephanie.
If your level of fitness has decreased due to your injury which caused a lower level of activity or none, fear not. Stephanie’s goal with Clinical Pilates is to assess your current strength, mobility, and stability and develop an appropriate program that will meet your rehabilitation needs.
Since a lot of fitness classes and the instructions can now be found online, it is reasonable to wonder about Clinical Pilates. ‘It is recommended that you learn the basic principles with the support of a therapist if you currently have any injuries,’ advises Stephanie, ‘to ensure appropriate muscle activation and alignment, preventing unnecessary compensation. The goal you’ll be moving toward will be to build a home exercise plan or integrate the individual into a group-based class taught by a Pilates instructor.’
- Stephanie is a STOTT Pilates certified instructor, as well as an experienced physiotherapist and former Olympic athlete.
- Your first assessment session will be 60 minutes long, and so is each appointment after that.
