Here’s what you see every day: People being overweight and being “just fine.” After all, as long as you are comfortable in your own skin things are bound to work well in other areas. Right? Wrong!
No matter how comfortable you feel, truth is, being overweight is not comfortable. Moreover, being overweight or obese carries health risks that are life threatening in the long run. While some people have conditions that contribute to their body mass index, many people slide into obesity through the comfort of easy lifestyle choices.
According to a study published this month in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) being overweight or obese means that you are at risk for heart disease, regardless of having a previous diagnostic of metabolic syndrome (high triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, low HD cholesterol — aka “good cholesterol,” expanded waistline or the dreaded “apple shape,” and at risk or already having type 2 diabetes.)
Aside from an increased risk of heart disease, being overweight or obese increases your risk of cancer, and may cause infertility. Overweight and obese people have trouble resting properly because of sleep apnea or difficulty in finding the right position to sleep.
Also, the same bones and articulations that are built to carry a regular weight per height type of body are subjected to increased effort and pressure and wear. Many overweight and obese people suffer from osteoarthritis, a painful condition that is mostly located in knees, hips and lower back.
Simply put: being overweight or obese carries too many health risks, many of them harbingers of chronic disease.
Often times adopting a habit as simple as daily exercise (it does not have to be strenuous to start with) can set you on a healthier path. It will not happen overnight but every day will take you closer to being and feeling healthy.
Including the right foods in your diet (and excluding the wrong ones, which we all know what they are by now) and exercising regularly will help you have a better outlook on life, reduce the risk of chronic disease and make you feel comfortable in your own skin, not because someone tells you so but because it really feels like that.
